The Confusion

Approved, but no coach chosen yet

"Most people get an Access to Work grant, then aren't sure how to actually use it."

The Coaching

A clear route from approval to your first session

Working With Gary

Certified ADHD coach. Accepted Access to Work provider. Individual sessions from £75.

Is this route right for you?

Access to Work is relevant whether your employer has already agreed support, you've been approved but haven't started, or you're still working out if you qualify.

Your employer has already agreed support

You know support is coming, or already arranged, and want a coach lined up and ready to start as soon as it's confirmed.

You've been approved but haven't chosen a coach

Access to Work has confirmed funding. The part nobody explains well is what happens next: how to pick a coach, get set up, and start using it.

You're already paying for coaching and wondering about funding it

If you're already working with a coach, or paying out of pocket, it's worth checking whether Access to Work could cover some or all of it.

You want to see how it works before you apply

Some clients talk to me before applying, so they know what to ask for and what a typical arrangement looks like.

• YOUR ADHD COACH

Gary Hammond, accepted Access to Work provider

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 32, after 20 years in tech as a founder and Managing Director. I know the gap between knowing what to do and doing it from the inside. In 2023, specialist coaching made enough of a difference that I retrained as a certified ADHD coach myself. I've since worked with Access to Work clients across the UK, and I know the process from the provider side as well as the client side.

Working together means collaborating with a trusted ally who helps you understand how ADHD actually affects your life, so you reach your own insights and your own way of taking action, rather than a generic productivity system applied to a brain it wasn't built for.

• WHAT WE COVER

What ADHD coaching covers

Every engagement is different. These are the areas that come up most consistently, whether coaching is funded through Access to Work or paid for directly.

Making sense of your ADHD

Understanding how ADHD actually shows up for you day to day: the real patterns, specific to you.

Starting and following through

Why getting started is harder than it should be, why momentum disappears, and what can be done about it practically.

Mental clutter and losing track

The experience of having too much in your head and none of it in the right order. Building methods that reduce the noise.

Impulsivity and decision-making

Acting before thinking, saying yes when you mean no, changing direction too quickly. Understanding the pattern and slowing it down where it matters.

Planning and problem-solving

Most standard planning systems were not designed with ADHD in mind. Finding methods that actually hold up in practice.

Motivation and self-direction

What to do when interest and urgency are not enough to get things moving, and external pressure is not available.

• WORKING TOGETHER

Once Access to Work has agreed your funding

What happens from choosing me as your coach through to being reimbursed for a session.

1

Choose your coach

Once Access to Work has agreed your funding, you’re free to choose who you work with. I’m an accepted Access to Work provider and can answer anything your case worker asks for.

2

Use your budget

It depends on your situation. Many employed clients have their employer pay for sessions directly, then recoup the cost from Access to Work themselves. Self-employed clients more often pay for each session personally and submit claims to recover the cost over time. I issue a receipt either way.

3

Get reimbursed

For clients claiming individually, once I confirm the session took place, Access to Work typically processes reimbursement within a week to 10 days. Employer-paid arrangements are recouped on the employer’s own schedule.

• WHAT CLIENTS SAY

Real experiences of ADHD coaching

OM

Oliver Mumba

"Gary takes a calm and measured approach while letting you express yourself."

I joined the coaching sessions shortly after my initial diagnosis, with very limited knowledge or understanding of what ADHD truly is. Thanks to Gary's vast knowledge, patience, and lived experience, he provided clear insights. He has a real understanding of how ADHD affects day-to-day life and is exceptionally good at identifying what will and will not work.

Financial Auditor
HD

Heba Dwikat

"He walks the walk and provides his services to the highest quality."

When I reached out, I was out of hope with myself. Gary helped me simplify my overly complicated systems and helped me build mechanisms to fight perfectionism and shame. What impressed me most was his professionalism, like setting expectations, sending summary emails with action items, and checking in weekly on time.

Founder / Product Designer

Sarah W.

"His lived experience of managing with ADHD brought a perspective I couldn't find elsewhere."

I was looking for someone who understood the complexities of ADHD and executive function in a leadership role. Gary's approach is refreshing and practical.

• WHAT A GRANT TYPICALLY COVERS

Most grants I've seen cover 12-18 sessions

Every grant is different, but the Access to Work budgets I've seen approved for ADHD coaching have typically been valid for 12 to 18 sessions. How payment works depends on your situation: some employers pay for the block upfront and I invoice them directly, while other clients pay for each session as it happens and I issue a receipt to support their own claim.

What is Access to Work, and how does it fund ADHD coaching?

Access to Work is a UK government scheme, run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), that helps people with recognised disabilities, including ADHD, stay in work. Support is not limited to equipment or workplace adjustments: it can include a grant that covers one-to-one coaching, assessed against how ADHD affects your specific job.

  • Access to Work is not means-tested. It's tied to your job, not your income.
  • Your employer doesn't need to pay anything upfront, and in most cases doesn't need to be involved in the application itself.
  • You don't need a formal ADHD diagnosis to apply, though having one, or being on a waiting list for assessment, usually helps the case.
  • Support is typically granted for a fixed period and renewed, rather than being open-ended.

For a fuller walkthrough of eligibility, how to apply, and what to expect from your assessment, see Access to Work and ADHD: how the scheme can fund your coaching.
