Is ADHD coaching right for you?

Coaching is relevant whether you were diagnosed recently, have known about your ADHD for years, or are still working out whether ADHD explains what you have been experiencing.

Recently diagnosed

You have a diagnosis and you are working out what it means in practice. Coaching provides the practical follow-up that the assessment process does not.

Diagnosed some time ago but still stuck

You know what ADHD is. You have read the books and tried the advice. What you do not have is a practical framework that works for your specific version of it. That is what coaching builds.

Not yet formally diagnosed

You do not need a formal diagnosis to start. If ADHD is showing up consistently in your day-to-day, coaching is open to you regardless of where you are in the assessment process.

High-functioning but carrying a private cost

Everything looks fine on the outside. The internal effort to keep it that way is not fine. Coaching addresses the gap between visible performance and the reality behind it.

• YOUR ADHD COACH

Gary Hammond, from Dublin

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 32, after 20 years in tech as a founder and Managing Director. I know the gap between knowing what to do and doing it from the inside. In 2023, specialist coaching made enough of a difference that I retrained as a certified ADHD coach myself.

• WHAT WE COVER

Picking up where the report leaves off

These are the six areas that come up most often once the initial relief of a diagnosis wears off and the practical questions start.

Understanding your ADHD beyond the diagnosis

The report tells you that you have ADHD. It does not tell you how that shows up in your actual week: at your desk, in the decisions that pile up by Friday. That is where coaching starts.

Getting past the start

Starting is rarely the problem for long. Three days in, the plan usually stalls anyway. What matters more is what keeps momentum going once the initial push wears off.

A place for what is running through your head

Thoughts and reminders surface fast and vanish just as fast, often before you act on them. Having somewhere for them to land, before they disappear, is what coaching builds first.

The gap between the impulse and the decision

Saying yes before you have thought it through, acting on the first reaction instead of the considered one. Lengthening that gap, even slightly, can be enough to catch it.

Planning that holds up in a bad week

Most planning systems assume a steady baseline you can rely on week to week. ADHD rarely gives you that. What holds up instead is something built for the weeks that do not cooperate.

What keeps you going without a deadline

Interest and urgency carry you some of the time, not always. Staying in motion once neither shows up, with no one else pushing, is the harder part.

• HOW SESSIONS WORK

What to expect in sessions and between them

Sessions usually pick up where the last one left off, continuing to refine what you are working on. When something more pressing comes up, we adjust. By the end, you leave having a plan for what the focus is to keep things moving.

After each session, I send a written summary of what was covered and any commitments made. Between sessions, we keep in touch where agreed to help you stay on top of your commitments. This is usually via WhatsApp and is included as standard.

Sessions are up to one hour and delivered via Zoom. That reaches clients across Ireland, not just Dublin, without a commute or fixed office hours to work around.

OM

Oliver Mumba

Dublin, Ireland

"Gary takes a calm and measured approach while letting you express yourself."

I joined the coaching sessions shortly after my initial diagnosis, with very limited knowledge or understanding of what ADHD truly is. Thanks to Gary's vast knowledge, patience, and lived experience, he provided clear insights. He has a real understanding of how ADHD affects day-to-day life and is exceptionally good at identifying what will and will not work.

Louise Lynch

"I finally have the tools to understand my own train of thought."

I found Gary's coaching invaluable to not only come to terms with my diagnosis, but also learning about ADHD as I was not too clued in on the condition. Gary has helped me understand why I struggle with certain things and I finally have the tools to understand my own train of thought and untangle it when it gets knotted.

IT Consultant
CM

Conor M.

Cork, Ireland

"Gary has a real knack to know when to push and challenge me or when to step back."

I was led to come to understand and connect with my challenges with clarity and was supported as I created the right amount of support around me. Gary has helped me get a much better understanding of how my ADHD affects my approach to things.

What happens after an ADHD diagnosis in Ireland

Most adults who get an ADHD diagnosis in Ireland feel the same initial thing: relief. It explains a lot. There is rarely a plan for what happens after. ADHD Coaching can help. Private assessment costs between €600 and €1,200 and typically ends with a report and limited guidance on what to do with it. The HSE has no consistent pathway for adult ADHD support after diagnosis. Most people leave the process knowing more about their ADHD than when they started, and not much else.

That is not a criticism of the assessment process. An assessment tells you what is going on. It does not tell you how to work with it day to day. The practical work of understanding how ADHD is showing up in your specific life, and finding methods that hold when things get difficult, is a different kind of work altogether. That is where coaching starts.

  • A diagnosis answers the question of why. It does not answer the question of what to do next.
  • Most adults leave the assessment with more self-knowledge and no clear support structure.
  • Coaching through public health channels is not a standard provision. Private coaching is the main route for most adults in Ireland.
  • Coaching does not require a referral or a formal diagnosis. You can start at any stage of the process.
